The Westmoreland Land Trust held their fourth annual Firefly Fest on Friday, June 26th, at St. Xavier Nature Preserve. Welcoming more than 300 community members for an evening of learning, hands-on-activities, and exploring.The 2026 Firefly Fest had the largest attendance Firefly Fest has seen since it began in 2023.
Community members and families gathered at St. Xavier Nature Preserve to learn more about Pennsylvania’s native fireflies. Attendees had the opportunity to observe fireflies in their natural habitat while enjoying a night of exploration, crafts, and nature based activities. Local families and community members filled the yard as they caught and released fireflies.
The event brought together local Pennsylvania Master Naturalists, Penn State Master Gardeners of Westmoreland County, the Westmoreland Conservation District, and Westmoreland Land Trust staff and volunteers. Together these local partners helped provide an evening filled with education and excitement. Firefly Fest provided an opportunity for the community to get out and explore nature.
Through the shared efforts from Westmoreland Land Trust, its partners, volunteers, and community members, the 2026 Firefly Fest was a tremendous success. The event provided a fun and engaging opportunity for community members of all ages to learn about Pennsylvania’s native fireflies, explore the outdoors, and connect with nature.
