Please join us on Saturday May 18 from Noon to 4 PM for the After Paddle! Come to Gray Wing Park at the west end of West Main Street in New Alexandria, for a gathering with music by Triple Play, delicious food available to purchase from Route 66 BBQ (and snow cones and baked goods from the New Alexandria Home Economics 4-H Club). The After Paddle will immediately follow the Loyalhanna Sojourn, and will celebrate the Loyalhanna and land conservation. Bring your lawn chair – admission is free, and you don’t have to paddle to party! After Paddle social media post-1 copy
Join Jack and Valerie Baker of the Western Pennsylvania Mushroom Club for a mushroom walk at the Otto and Magdalene Ackermann Nature Preserve. Walk from 9 am – 11 am, and then break for lunch and ID.
Leader: Jack and Valerie Baker; [email protected]; [email protected]
Directions: From Pittsburgh, travel to the intersection of PA 48 and US 30. Continue east on US 30 for ½ mile to make a left onto Leger Road (Sheetz on the right-hand corner). Turn left onto Leger Road and travel through the countryside for 2 miles. (Ignore the closed road signs as they are referring to a bridge near Brush Creek). At an intersection at the base of the hill, Leger Road turns to the right. Continue straight onto Ardara Road. After 1000 feet, look for the brown Ackermann Nature Preserve sign on the left and park at the end of the grassy strip between two homes.
GPS coordinates of the Preserve’s parking area are 40.36105, -79.74410 WGS84. Remember that the bridge from Ardara/PA 993 is currently not in use, so the Preserve must be reached from US 30.
Wear long pants and bring a lunch. Jack and Valerie will id at lunch.

Come join us! For an Earth Day celebration of wildflowers along the rich wooded slopes of Otto and Magdalene Ackermann Nature Preserve. The first part of the walk is an easy stroll along Old Dirt Road Trail. Those who wish to continue on a moderate walk can join us down the Wedding Trail for waterfalls and trilliums. Along the floodplain of Blue Dell Run, see more flowers, and learn about recent tree and shrub plantings.
We will practice social distancing. See https://www.cdc.gov/…/daily-life-coping/visitors.html for ways to enjoy the outdoors. (Stay home if you do not feel well. Stay at least 6 feet away from people you don’t live with. Wear a mask.)
