Join members of the WLT staff at the Ligonier Country Market where we will be the featured non-profit organization of the week. Information will be available about our up-coming summer programs and volunteer opportunities in Westmoreland County.
Join WLT’s AmeriCorps Service Member Dominic Demangone for an afternoon tour of St. Xavier Nature Preserve in Latrobe, the former site of Saint Xavier Academy run by the Sisters of Mercy. This guided walk will also include the interior of Bellbrook, the academy’s Civil-War era guest house. The walk will be slow-paced, but will involve some gentle slopes and uneven walkways. Please wear good walking shoes.
We will be taking a fun family adventure diving into the diverse world of the forests and streams of Westmoreland County.
Join Master Naturalist Paula Purnell, WLT’s Coordinator of Education Programs, for eight sessions of natural journaling — writing one’s observations of nature — to chronicle the seasonal changes from March through June at the meadow at Twin Lakes Park east of Greensburg.
Twin Lakes Meadow is a 17-acre native meadow whose gently rolling fields blossom with colorful wildflowers from spring to fall. Created as a pilot for the establishment of future meadows to enrich habitat for pollinator species and other wildlife, the meadow is a wonderful place to look for birds and butterflies.
Join us on a Bug Safari!
We’ll find, examine and collect bugs, then use microscopes and field guides to identify species, before releasing them back into nature. Conduct Roly-Poly races, play bug-themed games, sing buggy songs, and Build-a-Bug of your very own.
Where: St. Xavier Nature Preserve 106 Saint Xavier Road, Latrobe, PA. Meet at Bellbrook House.
Cost per Session: $10 first child, $5 each additional sibling, no charge for children three years and under. The content and activities are geared toward children 5-12 years old, but younger and older siblings are welcome to attend.
What to Bring: Wear close-toed shoes and dress appropriately for weather. Hats, sunscreen, and bug spray are recommended. Bring a blanket and a lunch and stay for a picnic in The Grove after the program! We’ll provide lemonade and snacks.
